Nine Hanover Terrace
Sensitive MEP Modernisation Within a Grade II Listed Heritage Residence
DescriptionNumber Nine Hanover Terrace is a prestigious Grade II listed private residence located in one of London’s most exclusive terraces. SISMEP were appointed to deliver the full Mechanical, Electrical, and Public Health (MEP) design and installation as part of a comprehensive refurbishment and infrastructure upgrade.
The project required a careful balance between modern performance standards and the preservation of historic architectural features, ensuring the building remained both compliant and sympathetic to its heritage status.

PROJECT OVERVIEW
Number Nine Hanover Terrace is an exceptional Grade II listed property requiring a complete upgrade of its Mechanical, Electrical, and Public Health systems.
The project involved sensitively modernising the building’s infrastructure while preserving its historic character and architectural significance.

CHALLENGES
Full MEP upgrade within an existing structure — the project required the complete replacement and upgrading of outdated MEP services within a structurally complex building.
Careful coordination was essential to integrate modern systems without compromising the building’s fabric, original features, or finishes.
Grade II listed constraints — working within a listed property introduced strict heritage and planning limitations on service routes, penetrations, and visible installations.
All installations had to remain sympathetic to the original architecture with minimal visual impact, requiring close liaison with conservation officers and planning authorities throughout.
Refurbishment complexity — typical refurbishment constraints included restricted ceiling and floor voids, limited riser capacity, and the need to protect historic elements and decorative finishes.
Innovative routing and discreet integration were required to incorporate contemporary building services while maintaining the integrity of the property.

SOLUTIONS
Detailed BIM coordination was used to plan service routes and interfaces early, minimising risk to heritage fabric and reducing on-site clashes.
Compact, high-efficiency plant selection helped achieve modern performance standards while limiting spatial and visual impact within restricted zones.
Discrete installation strategy ensured visible components were positioned and detailed to remain sympathetic to the original interiors and external elevations.
Close stakeholder collaboration with architects, specialist contractors, and conservation teams supported design approvals and smooth delivery.

KEY TAKEAWAYS
Heritage refurbishments demand precision — modern services can be integrated successfully when design is detailed, coordinated, and sympathetic.
Early coordination reduces risk — tight service routes and protected finishes require decisions to be locked early to avoid rework.
Performance and preservation can coexist — the best outcomes come from balancing efficiency, comfort, and architectural sensitivity.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.
